Readers who love a mystery tend to remember the detective long after the culprit has been unmasked. The plotting matters, of course, but it is the investigator who keeps us coming back: the habits, the irritations, the small flashes of insight that arrive just before the final chapter. This guide gathers some of the best…
Ask a room of crime readers to name the best detective in fiction and the argument starts before the question has finished. Sherlock Holmes is the name on most lips, and one recent list of twenty great literary detectives admitted that a ranking which did not put Holmes at the very top would not seem…
Crime fiction has a reputation for blood, and plenty of it. Television schedules are full of it, and bookshop displays lean heavily towards the darkest end of the shelf. Yet a large and busy corner of the genre works in an entirely different register. These are the quiet books, where the puzzle matters more than…
A body in a library. A locked room. A suspect list pinned to the wall of an incident room. The ingredients of a mystery are easy to list, and yet two novels with almost identical ingredients can feel completely different to read. One keeps you turning pages because you must know how the trick was…

Thatched cottages, a parish church, a village shop, and a small population with long memories give an author everything needed to plant a body and a puzzle in the same afternoon. The list below covers a classic Cotswolds series and a more recent village…
A murder in a city lands on a desk as a case number. A murder in a village lands on a community as a rupture. The pub landlord knew the victim’s family. The woman who delivers the post noticed who was arguing by the green the night before. The person who found the body has…
